What is voice leading?

Voice leading is the motion of singular melodies in conjunction with one another.

Now in english

From a G chord (G, B, D) to a C chord (C, E, G) some notes may move up, some may move down, some don't move at all. "Good" voice leading is the technique of shifting all the notes as little as possible to get the next chord. In our example: GBD to CEG, we have one note in common (G). Keep that one the same. Move the B up to a C (Just one fret) and move your D up to a C (just two frets.)

But why?

Free up your playing! How do you change from a G to a C chord? How about if you were on the 3rd fret? What about the 8th fret? 12? Explore here and find the answers.

Tip: In voice leading mode, you can change chords by using the menu on the top right, OR use the cycle selector (The menu that says things like, "seconds," "thirds," and so on). Select how far of a harmonic leap you wish to make and then press the spacebar to watch it happen. Ex. If you're on a F chord and select "fifths" you will first leap up a fifth to a C. Then again from there to a G, then a D and on and on.
